Valckx [Valck], Pieter [Peeter]
(b Mechelen, 1 March 1734; d Mechelen, 3 May 1785). Flemish sculptor. He was the son of a painter and trained with the sculptors Theodor Verhaegen and Jan-Baptist Mooriaen ( fl c. 1750). He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp and in the studio of Alexander Schobbens (172081). In 1761 he returned to Mechelen, where he became a master sculptor. He produced many pieces of church furnishings after designs by Verhaegen, such as the pulpit (1774) for Ste Catherine, Mechelen. In 1780 he became dean of the Guild of St Luke. The panels (1784) carved in relief of the choir stalls in the St Janskerk, Mechelen, are thought to be his finest work, displaying a feeling for naturalistic detail in the tradition of Verhaegen.
