Utrecht Psalter.
Illustrated manuscript (Utrecht, Bib. Rijksuniv., MS. 32) made between AD 816 and 834 at the Benedictine abbey of Hautvillers (Altumvillare) in the diocese of Reims, then held by Archbishop EBBO. It is one of the finest examples of Carolingian art. The early history of the manuscript is unknown, but several ivory carvings made between c. 850 and 870 for Emperor Charles the Bald are dependent on its illustrations (Zurich, Schweizer. Landesmus., AG.1311 and LM.21825; Paris, Bib. N., MS. lat. 1152; Rome, Vatican, Throne of St Peter). Three surviving copies witness the manuscripts presence at Christ Church, Canterbury, from c. 1000 onwards (c. 1000, London, BL, Harley MS. 603; c. 1150, Cambridge, Trinity Coll., MS. R.17.1; c. 1200, Paris, Bib. N., MS. lat. 8846). After the Dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, the manuscript passed into private hands and eventually into the library of Sir Robert Cotton (15711631). Loaned to Thomas Howard (15851646), 2nd Earl of Arundel, it was brought to the Netherlands and, under obscure circumstances, came into the possession of Willem de Ridder, who in 1716 gave it to the University Library at Utrecht.
