Ulocrino

( fl c. 1485–1530). Italian sculptor. The identification of this artist, who signed his bronze plaquettes VLOCRINO, has prompted a number of proposals, the most ingenious (Molinier) being that his name was formed from the Greek oulos and the Latin crinis, meaning ‘curly-haired’, and is therefore a pseudonym for Andrea Briosco, known as Andrea Riccio on account of his curly hair; this identification has been refuted on stylistic grounds, while it is accepted that this artist may also have been curly-haired.
