Ugryumov, Grigory (Ivanovich)
(b Moscow, 11 May 1764; d St Petersburg, 18 March 1823). Russian painter. He attended the Academy of Arts in St Petersburg from 1770 to 1785, studying history painting under Gavriil Kozlov (?173892), Ivan Akimov (17551814) and Pyotr Sokolov. From 1785 to 1790 Ugryumov held an Academy scholarship in Italy, where he copied the works of the Old Masters and studied at both the French and Roman academies. He returned to Russia in 1791 and for the rest of his life taught history painting at the St Petersburg Academy, where he became Rector in 1820. He attached great importance to drawing as part of the students training.
