Tordesillas, Gaspar de
(b ?Tordesillas, before 1494; d ?Valladolid, after 1564). Spanish sculptor. He was living in Valladolid in 1554, when he described himself as a carver (entallador de ymagineria) and gave his age as over 60. In 1536 he directed work on the retable of the parish church at Oñate, carried out in collaboration with several sculptors, and in the same year he carved the retable containing paintings for the church of El Salvador, Simancas. He collaborated with Juan de Juni on the retable (1547) for the church of S Benito, Valladolid (fragments, Valladolid, Mus. N. Escul.), as well as carrying out other works in the city. At Tordesillas he carved and assembled the retable of the Capilla de la Piedad, S Antolin, a project on which Juni collaborated from 1564. In 1562 Tordesillas received final payment for the tomb (in situ) of one of the founders of S Antolin, Gaspar de Alderete, on which instalments had been paid in 1550 and 1560. Tordesillas was essentially a carver and joiner whose work, which generally reflects the current Mannerist style in Spanish sculpture, is of a high quality. He often incorporated medallions in his sculptural decoration and used caryatids at the corners.
