Takamatsu, Shin

(b Shimane Prefect., 5 Aug 1948). Japanese architect. He studied at Kyoto University, graduating in 1971, and from 1971 to 1975 he worked for the architect Kiyoshi Kawasaki (b 1932). In 1979 he received an MA from Kyoto University and in 1980 he opened his own office in Kyoto. Takamatsu’s buildings are most interesting from the exterior, viewed as sculptural objects in the urban landscape. He created striking effects by the exaggeration of scale and the juxtaposition of different materials, colours and textures. His works at first appear to evoke early industrial architecture and machinery, as can be seen in two dental clinics in Kyoto: one, Ark (1983), resembles a locomotive, and the other, Pharaoh (1984), has stacks and portholes that are reminiscent of an ocean liner.
