(2) Abel Stimmer
(b Schaffhausen, 7 June 1542; d Baden-Baden, after 1606). Painter and etcher, brother of (1) Tobias Stimmer. After instruction with a painter in either Konstanz or Schaffhausen, in 15645 he worked for the counts of Fürstenberg. In 1566 he painted three portraits (destr. 1944) of members of the Peyer family and the portrait of Andreas Mörlin, burgomaster of St Gall, and in 1569 a portrait of Elisabeth Peyer (Schaffhausen, Mus. Allerheiligen). In 1570 he was living at his mothers house in Schaffhausen and between 1572 and 1580 he worked as a portrait painter in Freiburg im Breisgau. As a Protestant he came into conflict with rival Catholic painters, resulting in his being sent to prison. He was making epitaphs c. 1576, and in 1580 was responsible for the altar (destr.) in the second Kaiserkapelle in Freiburg Cathedral. In 1580 he requested the privilege of Mannrecht in Schaffhausen and in the same year was granted citizens rights in Strasbourg. In 1584 he started negotiating to complete the works left unfinished by his brother Tobias in the banqueting hall of the castle at Baden-Baden. In 1585 he became court painter to Philip, Margrave of Baden-Baden (reg 156988), for whom he completed the gallery of ancestral portraits started by his brother Tobias Stimmer.
