(2) Nora Steriadi [née Condrus]

(b Cartiu-Gorj, 23 Oct 1889; d Sinaia, 1948). Decorative artist, wife of (1) Jean Al Steriadi. She studied at the Fine Arts School in Bucharest under D. Serafi, then in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. From 1915 she devoted herself to the decorative arts, having exhibitions of embroidery in Bucharest and at the Galerie Boudet, Paris, in 1919 and 1921. From 1920 she produced vases and other enamelled ceramics with Romanian and Transylvanian-Saxon popular and medieval designs. In 1928 she exhibited at the Musée National de Céramique in Sèvres, which acquired 15 of the exhibits. In 1930–32 she made a large tapestry representing the Romanian prince Constantine Brâncoveanu with his Family (Bucharest, N. Mus. A.). She went to Venice in 1932 to learn the technique of coloured glass mosaic, and early in 1933 she began to create large panels using this technique. She chose her subject-matter from religion, Romanian medieval history or folklore. She exhibited mosaics in the Romanian Pavilion of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (1937), and reworked the Constantine Brâncoveanu image in mosaic: this was shown at the World’s Fair in New York (1939) and given to the University of Pittsburgh, PA. Many of her Romanian mosaics were destroyed in bombardments during World War II.

Part of the Steriadi family
