(2) Nikolaus Solis
(b Nuremberg, c. 1544; d Augsburg, before 8 May 1585). Son of (1) Virgil Solis. He trained with his father and probably with Jenichen. On 20 August 1564 he married Susanna Klockerin in Augsburg, where he had settled. Virgils and Jenichens influence can be observed in the forms and theme of Nikolauss Nine Muses engravings (1565; Andresen, nos 19) and in his other early series on goddesses and soldiers (A 1015 and 1728). Nikolauss major series was the title-page and 15 etchings (completed 1570) illustrating the festivities connected with the marriage of William IV, Duke of Bavaria, to Renate von Lothringen in Munich in 1568. This marriage series was also published in Munich by Adam Berg, a printer with whom Nikolaus collaborated on two other projects. In 1570 he supplied the two woodcut portraits of the authors for the Archidoxa D. Philippi Theophrasti Paracelsi von Hohenhaim/zwölff Bücher/ ...Auch noch vier andere Büchlein ... von D. Johanne Alberto Wimpinaeo. The following year he created the 24 woodcut illustrations in the Passional published by Berg.
