(1) François Simonau
(b Bornhem, 26 May 1783; d London, Aug 1859). Painter and lithographer. He began his artistic education with Robert Frickx in Bruges and between 1808 and 1812 was a pupil of A.-J. Gros in Paris. In 1815 he settled in London, where he met Thomas Lawrence, who introduced him to London society. He soon became successful as a portrait painter, exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the British Institution from 1818. He may also have exhibited in Belgium during his occasional visits to Bruges.
