Shen Shichong [Shen Shih-ch’ung; zi Ziju]

(b Huating [now Songjiang, Shanghai Municipality]; fl c. 1611–40). Chinese painter. He first studied painting under Song Xu and later under Zhao Zuo, who was the more important influence of the two. Song and Zhao both belonged to the Yunjian (the ancient name for Songjiang) school of painting, a loosely knit group of painters rather than a school in the usual sense, and Shen himself became a teacher. After 1644, when the Manchu conquest of China was complete, the Yunjian school became insignificant.
