Sato, Churyo
(b Miyagi Prefecture, 4 July 1912). Japanese sculptor. He spent his early years in Hokkaido, moving to Tokyo in 1932. He studied under Fumio Asakura (18831964) at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1939. In the same year he participated in the creation of the Shinseisakuha Kyokai (Shinseisaku School Association) with sculptor Yasutake Funakoshi (b 1912). In 1944 he was called up for military service. He returned from his internment in Siberia in 1948 and began to sculpt again. In 1952 he exhibited Man from Gunma Prefecture (bronze, h. 295 mm, 1952; Tokyo, N. Mus. Mod. A.) at the 16th Shinseisaku Ten (Shinseisaku Association Exhibition). This piece is considered to capture well distinctive Japanese facial features and has become one of his best-known works. The model for the piece was a native of Gunma who had been at school with Sato in Sapporo.
