(6) Jan [Johan] Sadeler II

(b ?Frankfurt am Main, ?1588; d ?Munich, 1665 or after). Engraver, etcher and goldsmith, son of (3) Raphael Sadeler I. He followed his family to Munich and Italy; he was about 16 years old when he returned to Munich in 1604. In 1611 he was on his way to Augsburg. Jan II collaborated with his brothers Raphael II and Filips on the illustrations for the Zodiacus Christianus (1617), Josephus hoc est (1617), Alphabetum Christi (1618) and Elegantes variorum Virgilio Ovidio Centones (1617). He executed four etchings for the Expeditiones in utramque Austriam et Bohemiam ephemiris (Hollstein, nos 140–44) and five prints for Aeternitate considerationes (1622; Hollstein, nos 113–22). Between 1624 and 1631 Jan II lived in Innsbruck, where he was apparently active also as a goldsmith. He entered the service of Archduke Leopold William of Austria for a year in 1626. During the time in Innsbruck he engraved various prints for the Heilig serapisch Lieb brinendes (sic) Herz (1631). In 1631 he was banned from the town and returned to Munich for good. In subsequent years he engraved various book illustrations and some individual prints, for example De castro doloris Mariae Leopoldinae, a memorial to the second wife of Ferdinand I. He worked in Konstanz between 1652 and 1661, when he was also banned from this town. There is no trace of him after 1665.

Part of the Sadeler family
