Romoaldus [Romualdo; Romualdus]

( fl Apulia, c. 1079–89). Italian sculptor. His name occurs in an inscription on a marble episcopal throne (see THRONE, fig. 2) in Canosa Cathedral (URSO PRECEPTOR ROMOALDUS AD HEC FUIT ACTOR), which names the patron as Urso, Archbishop of Bari and Canosa (reg 1079/80–89). The design and construction of the throne (total h. 2 m) is characteristic of 11th-century south Italian episcopal thrones. It rests on two free-standing elephants and has decorative reliefs below the seat at the front and sides. On the front panel are two displayed eagles in high relief within a border of foliage scrolls, and on the sides confronted griffins and sphinxes. The cross-beams supporting the seat are decorated with a central cross flanked by foliage scrolls and terminal masks.
