(2) Ramón Rogent

(b Barcelona, 12 Feb 1920; d Plan-d’Orgon, nr Avignon, 30 Oct 1958). Painter, great-grandson of (1) Elías Rogent. He was encouraged by his family to take an early interest in art and architecture; in 1936 he began studying architecture like his great-grandfather but decided at the end of one year to devote himself to painting. Among the influences on Rogent’s early work were Fauvism, Expressionism and Cubism, especially that of Picasso, and there are clear connections between Catalan Noucentisme and Rogent’s works of the early 1940s such as the monumental painting Four Young People Working (1944). On visits to Portugal in 1945 and 1947 to take part in exhibitions of contemporary art, he saw works by Picasso, Chagall, Beckmann and Dufy that confirmed his dedication to modernism. Among his most notable works are Dufy-influenced landscapes such as Homage to Deyà (oil on canvas, 650x810mm, 1948; Sant Cugat del Vallès, priv. col., see exh. cat., p. 30) and landscapes and highly decorative figure paintings of the early 1950s such as Rocking Chair (1951; Barcelona, Diana Garrigosa i Lapeñas priv. col., see exh. cat., p. 38), in which flat shapes are boldly outlined in black and filled with bold patterns in bright colours. He died in a road accident on his way to visit Picasso.
