Robert, Paul-Ponce-Antoine [Robert de Séri; Séry]
(b Séry-en-Portien, Ardennes, 11 Jan 1686; d Paris, 29 Dec 1733). French painter. He was a pupil of Jean Jouvenet and Pierre-Jacques Cazes in Paris. In 1706 he went at his own expense to Rome, where he remained for 18 years working as an art dealer. In 1724 he met Cardinal de Rohan, in whose retinue he returned to Paris. Although he enjoyed the patronage of influential collectors such as Pierre Crozat, Cardinal Melchior de Polignac and Pierre-Jean Mariette, his two attempts to become an associate (agréé) of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture failed, perhaps as a result of hostility to his independent character. His health was delicate, and he died at the age of 47, worn out by a difficult life.
