(2) Jorge Reinel
(b ?Lisbon, c. 1502; d Lisbon, after 1572). Son of (1) Pedro Reinel. He was still very young when he went to Seville around 1519 and there made charts and instructed young men in cartography; among these was the Portuguese Diogo Ribeiro (c. 1500after 1532), who was active in Castile. The maps made by Jorge supported the claims of the crown of Castile to the spice-producing Molucca Islands, which he inserted within the area under Spanish jurisdiction. It is also known, however, that while he was in Seville he sent information on developments in Castilian navigation back to the court in Lisbon. In 1528 he received a pension of 10,000 reais from the Portuguese Crown.
