(1) Pedro Reinel

(b ?Lisbon, last quarter of 15th century; d after 1542). He is first documented as a menial at the court of John II of Portugal. One of his first works may have been an Atlantic chart (Bordeaux, Archv. Gironde), which has been attributed to him and dated as 1483 (Cortesão, 1960) but is probably of a slightly later date. His Atlantic chart of c. 1504 (Munich, Bayer. Staatsbib.) is important for the history of cartography, as it was the first map to show oblique lines of latitude next to Newfoundland (Terra Nova). This detail was repeated in other maps, and it gave rise to various interpretations and discussions. He drew a further Atlantic chart c. 1535 (London, N. Mar. Mus.).

Part of the Reinel family
