Rearte, Armando
(b General Roca, Río Negro, 1946). Argentine painter. He began to paint at the age of 19, exhibiting for the first time at the Premio Ver y Estimar exhibition in Buenos Aires in 1966. After living from 1967 to 1969 in Paris, where he participated in the student demonstrations of the period, he abandoned painting until his return to Argentina ten years later. Motivated by a sense of desperation arising both from his loss of faith in painting and by the repressive political climate in which his country had become engulfed, he created an aura of catastrophe in his paintings through the use of dynamic and monumental fragments, sombre colours, dense surfaces and aggressive brushwork. His work was recognized in Argentina as an important contribution to the emergence in the 1980s of Neo-Expressionism and New Image painting.
