Ramdas [Ramadasa]

( fl c. 1590–1650). Indian miniature painter. This technically talented artist contributed to several of the major productions of the royal workshop during the final two decades of the Mughal emperor Akbar’s reign (reg 1556–1605). He worked on one of the major productions of the imperial workshop, the illustration of the autobiography of the first Mughal emperor, Babur (reg 1526–30), the Baburnama; the manuscript was presented to Akbar on 24 November 1589. Ramdas was responsible for the important scene depicting Babur in a garden at Agra, celebrating his victory over Ibrahim Lodi (London, V&A, IM.275–1913; see Das, pl. vi, pp. 20–21). According to a note on the margin, the painting was completed in 50 days.
