Quispez Asín, Carlos
(b Lima, 15 April 1900; d Lima, 1 April 1983). Peruvian painter and teacher. He studied in Lima at the Academia Concha from 1915 to 1917 and later at the Escuela Nacional Superior de Bellas Artes under Daniel Hernández. In 1921 he travelled to Spain, where he enrolled at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid under the Spanish painter Cecilio Plá (b 1860). He returned in the 1930s to Lima, where he developed a style of painting characterized by linear and gracefully expressive drawing and by a delicate handling of oil paint comparable to watercolour in texture and tonality. He also executed murals with reminiscences of Piero della Francesca and Paolo Uccello both in California, where he lived for some years, and in Lima at the Cámara de Diputados, the Ministerio de Salud Pública and the Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería. He won a number of honours, beginning with the Primer Premio de Pintura de Viña del Mar in Chile (1937) and the Medalla de Oro de la Municipalidad de Lima (1940). From 1943 to 1969 he taught at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Lima.
