Quijano [Guijano], Jerónimo [Gerónimo]

(b c. 1500; d Murcia, before 22 Nov 1563). Spanish architect and sculptor. He was a central figure in Murcia in the Renaissance. His monumental architecture, characterized by decorative richness, was innovative, and his sculptural compositions, inspired by Italian work and also reminiscent of the school of Burgos, are particularly fine. He may have been educated in Burgos and is first recorded as having worked in Jaén on the choir-stalls of the cathedral (1524). He succeeded Jacopo Florentino as master of Murcia Cathedral (1526–63) and was responsible for assessing the value of the archbishop’s throne (1543–8) made by Alonso Berruguete for the choir of Toledo Cathedral. Quijano’s architectural projects in Murcia Cathedral involved the construction of the second section of the tower (completed 1545), the door of the sacristy (1531), the Capilla de la Anunciación (1527–9) and the Capilla de los Junterones, with its elliptical ground-plan and shell-shaped ceiling (1530–41). His documented work includes the fine vault (1542) at the upper end of the interior of S Maria, Chinchilla, an element that is repeated elsewhere, for example at the church of S Patricio, Lorca (c. 1536–41), which is also attributed to him. Also documented is his exceptional Ionic order (1538–42) at S Juan, Albacete.
