Pugliani, Domenico

(b Vaglia, nr Florence, 5 Feb 1589; d Florence, 7 June 1658). Italian painter. As a young man he moved to Florence and in 1612 was registered as a member of the Accademia del Disegno. His name was included by Baldinucci among the pupils of Matteo Rosselli, although his apprenticeship may have ended by 1613. He continued to work alongside his former master in Florence, executing large fresco cycles, for example at SS Annunziata (1614). The stylistic influence of Rosselli is strongly evident in Pugliani’s early independent work until about 1623, notably in the painting on canvas of the Processional Cross (c. 1615–20; Vaglia, S Pietro). Pugliani executed frescoes with Rosselli at the Casino Mediceo di S Marco during the early 1620s, but after 1623 his work became more expressive and dramatic, unusually so for a Florentine painter of that period, notably in altarpieces such as the Miracle of the Blessed Salvatore da Orta (Florence, Ognissanti). He went to Germany late in 1628, but this period is undocumented. He returned to Florence in 1633. His style thereafter became increasingly influenced by the intensified morbidity and emotionalism in vogue among the city’s artists. This is apparent, for example, in the canvas of the Communion of St Mary Magdalene executed for S Maria Maggiore (1636; in situ). Between 1637 and 1640 he painted altarpieces and frescoes of historical and sacred subjects in and near Florence, but received few commissions thereafter. A painting of the Flagellation (c. 1642; Montagnana, nr Florence, S Martino) is among the last works attributable to him.
