Prugger [Brucker; Bruckher; Pruchert; Prucker], Nikolaus
(b Trudering, nr Munich, c. 1620; d Munich, bur 26 March 1694). German painter. After travelling to Italy on a scholarship from the Bavarian elector Maximilian I, he studied in Munich under Ottheinrich Sustris, Johann Ulrich Loth and Balthasar Ableithner (16131705). In 1644 he was engaged as court painter and as drawing instructor to the future elector Ferdinand Maria of Bavaria. Prugger painted altarpieces, landscapes, animals, portraits in oil and miniatures. Apart from the impressions of his Italian journey, Netherlandish and French influences are also evident. He is important as a chronicler of Maximilians court. The double portrait of Elector Maximilian I with the Crown Prince Ferdinand Maria (c. 1650; Munich, Bayer. Nmus.) shows a concern to capture individual features, masked by the stiffness of the formal posture and a dark, sober colouring.
