Preciado de la Vega, Francisco
(b Seville, 1712; d Rome, 1789). Spanish painter. He trained in Seville in the workshop of Domingo Martínez. At the same time he embarked on a religious career and received minor orders. In 1737 he went to Rome, accompanied by the sculptor Felipe de Castro, and completed his training under the painter Sebastiano Conca. In 1739 he won first prize at the Accademia di S Luca in Rome, which led Philip V to award him a generous annual allowance from the following year. Though in Rome, he was active in bringing about the foundation of the Real Academia de S Fernando in Madrid. In 1753 he was named an honorary member of this body, and he became responsible for the training of the Spanish scholarship students sent to Rome. He was appointed Secretary (17626 and 177077) and Principal (176670) of the Accademia di S Luca. He also wrote on the theory and practice of painting.
