Prado, Mateo de
(b Sobrado, La Coruña, before 1635; d Santiago de Compostela, 1677). Spanish sculptor. He trained in Vallisoleta and collaborated with GREGORIO FERNÁNDEZ in the monastery of Aranzazu, near Bilbao. By 1639 he had returned to Galicia, where he carved the choir-stalls in the Benedictine monastery of S Martín Pinario. This important commission comprised 149 panels in high relief in three tiers with the Life of the Virgin on the lower seats, figures of saints, including St James, on the upper seats and the Life of St Benedict on the frieze along the top; here the influence of Castile is apparent in all the figures and in the compositions as a whole. About 1650 he was commissioned to carve the retables in the Galician Cistercian monastery of Montederramo, the high altar with the Virgin Appearing to St Bernard, the Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin (dismantled and removed from the chancel, but preserved in the monastery). Castilian influence is again evident in this work, but there is also a development towards greater Baroque movement. This was more fully realized in the fine Immaculate Conception and particularly in the Assumption, both of 1658, in Orense Cathedral. Mateo de Prado also worked on the baldacchino in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral about 1665, and on the stone relief of the Annunciation (1674) on the façade of the Madres Mercedarias, also in Santiago de Compostela.
