(b Warsaw, 14 July 1898; d Warsaw, 24 April 1962). Polish painter. He studied architecture at the Warsaw Polytechnic (1918) and painting at Konrad Krzyzanowski’s art school in Warsaw and at the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts (1922–4). He joined the KAPISTS and went with them to Paris (1924–33). He shared their fascination with Bonnard and admired Jan Cybis (1897–1972), the leader of the group, for the luminosity of his colours. Like other Kapists at this time, he painted interiors and still-lifes, such as Flowers and Fruit on the Table (1931; Poznan, Z. T. Frackowiak priv. col.). Unlike them Potworowski was interested in Cubism. He took some lessons from Léger who greatly influenced his handling of composition based on rhythmic divisions. He was attracted by sea and ships: he not only painted them, but also made ship models for a living and sailed in the Mediterranean. In 1943 he settled in England, taught at Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, Wilts (after 1948), and joined the London Group (1952). He became friendly with Victor Pasmore and Peter Lanyon. Gradually he abandoned all figuration and began to create abstract paintings of extreme subtlety of colour, conceived as a synthesis of visual impressions and psychic emotions that remained after observing nature (e.g. Oval Landscape from Cornwall, 1957; Kraków, N. Mus.). He introduced collages to some of his late works, such as Stairs (1956; Poznan, N. Mus.). In 1958 he returned to Poland and took teaching posts in Poznan and Sopot.
