Ponscarme, (François-Joseph-)Hubert

(b Belmont-les-Monthureux, Vosges, 20 May 1827; d Malakoff, Hauts-de-Seine, 28 Feb 1903). French medallist and sculptor. He came of a peasant family; having at an early age shown a talent for engraving, he gained in 1850 a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, where he trained under Eugène Oudiné and Augustin-Alexandre Dumont. Ponscarme received his first official commission, for a portrait medal of Napoleon III, in 1854, and from 1857 he exhibited regularly at the Salon. The prize medal that he executed for the Exposition Universelle in Paris of 1867 was very well received; the following year, for the Académie des Inscriptions, he modelled an innovative medal of Joseph Naudet (London, BM), which, with its matt background and suppression of the customary rim, proved very influential. In 1871 he became professor of medal engraving at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where his pupils included Oscar Roty, Jean-Baptiste Daniel-Dupuis, Ovide Yencesse (1869–1947) and Alexandre Charpentier. Ponscarme’s work consisted mainly of cast portrait medallions, but he also made a number of struck medals, as well as several busts in marble and bronze.
