Pombaline style.
Portuguese architectural style that developed in the 18th century and that was named after Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquês de POMBAL. Following the earthquake of 1 November 1755 that completely destroyed Lisbon, Carvalho e Melo, the future Marquês de Pombal, undertook a total reorganization of the Kingdom of Joseph (see LISBON, §1). Plans for the citys reconstruction were drawn up, approved and carried out under the supervision of the chief engineer MANUEL DA MAIA and the military engineers EUGÉNIO DOS SANTOS and CARLOS MARDEL. The aim was to rebuild the city on its traditional location on the banks of the Tagus and to alter its urban plan, which, apart from the sumptuous late 16th-century royal-palace area, dated back to the Middle Ages. The Baroque additions of the early 18th century had done little to improve the overall scheme.
