Plumier, Pieter-Denis [Pierre-Denis]

(b Brussels, bapt 14 March 1688; d London, 1721). Flemish sculptor. In 1699 he studied in Antwerp with Louis Willemssens; he later continued his studies in Paris, and in 1708 won a first prize at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. He then went to live in Rome, where he devoted himself to the study of the work of François Du Quesnoy. On his return to Antwerp he executed two marble groups for the Marquis de Mérode-Westerloo: the Rape of Proserpina and the Rape of the Sabine Women, subsequently installed in the park of the château of Enghien, Hainaut (now Brussels, Pal. Egmont). In 1713 Plumier settled in Brussels, and the following year carved the marble bust of Goswin de Wynants (untraced). At the same time he was commissioned to make L’Escaut (the River Scheldt), one of two fountains in the courtyard of the Hôtel de Ville in Brussels. He collaborated on this work with his pupil Laurent Delvaux. He executed four sculptures of putti and various ornaments for the same building. Following this commission, Plumier was enrolled in 1714 as a member of the Corporation des Quatre Couronnés. He sculpted two statues, Faith and Hope, for the Premonstratensian abbey at Grimbergen; they were subsequently installed in the cathedral of SS Michel et Gudule, but are now untraced. He also executed busts of the Four Fathers of the Church (untraced) for the abbey at Dilighem.
