Pla Janini, Joaquim
(b Tarragona, 23 March 1879; d Barcelona, 19 Feb 1970). Spanish doctor and photographer. Although a doctor by profession, photography played a central role in his life. Faithful to the Pictorialist ideology, he also paradoxically assimilated some of the aesthetic positions of the avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s. His work is outstanding for his mastery of colour processes, especially in executing transferred bromoils and autochrome. In 1931 he retired from medicine for reasons of health and devoted all his time to developing the technique of hand-processed positive prints. He is best known for his photographs of romantic Mediterranean landscapes, woods, still-lifes, allegorical representations and images of Barcelona.
