Pimenov, Yury [Georgy] (Ivanovich)

(b Moscow, 20 Nov 1903; d Moscow, 6 Nov 1977). Russian painter, draughtsman and stage designer. He studied at the Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops (Vkhutemas) in Moscow (1920–25), where he considered V. A. Favorsky his principal teacher. At the end of his studies he became one of the founders of the SOCIETY OF EASEL PAINTERS (OST). He began to exhibit paintings with themes drawn from sport and industry, such as You Make Heavy Industry! (1927; Moscow, Tret’yakov Gal.). These and many other works were influenced by German Expressionist painting. At the same time he worked as an artist for the journal 30 dney (30 days), in which he published his sharp, dynamic genre drawings.
