Petzolt [Petzold; Pezolt], Hans
(b Joachimsthal, 1551; d Nuremberg, 19 March 1633). German gold- and silversmith. As a journeyman he worked for three master goldsmiths, one of whom may have been Wenzel Jamnitzer. In 1578 Petzolt became a master goldsmith in Nuremberg, where he remained except when summoned for three short visits to Prague by Emperor Rudolf II in 1605, 1608 and 1616. He succeeded Jamnitzer as the leading silversmith in Nuremberg. By 1591 he was elected by the goldsmiths guild to the city council of Nuremberg; in 1611 he was awarded the highest office in his guild. Documents of the city council of Nuremberg show that he was the goldsmith with the most commissions between 1600 and 1630.
