Persico, Edoardo

(b Naples, 8 Feb 1900; d Milan, 11 Jan 1936). Italian writer, critic and designer. He first studied law but abandoned it to become a freelance journalist and critic of painting and architecture. In 1927 Persico settled in Turin, where he came into contact with painting circles and contributed to the formation of the Gruppo Sei, members of which had leanings towards a more rational European outlook. In 1929 Persico moved to Milan to work in the Galleria Bardi, which he later took over and renamed the Galleria del Milione, to edit the review Belvedere and to write for Casabella. With Giuseppe Pagano, by 1931 Persico became the most authoritative voice on Casabella, revolutionizing its graphic design and adapting it to the canons of Razionalismo. For the few years before his premature death, he was its most consistent and articulate advocate. He also achieved considerable success as a designer, for example with the Salone d’Onore at the Sixth Milan Triennale of 1936, where his aim was to underline the possible links between the classical and the modern. However, he devoted himself mainly to his activities as theorist and critic of the new architecture.
