Permoser, Balthasar
(b Kammer, nr Otting, Chiemgau, Bavaria, 13 Aug 1651; d Dresden, 20 Feb 1732). German sculptor. He was among the foremost sculptors of the late Baroque period in Germany. His artistic range extends from the full-blooded Roman Baroque of his monumental sculptures through the Rococo light-heartedness of his decorative works to the sublime pathos of his small devotional pieces. His collaboration with the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann on the Zwinger in Dresden gave rise to a palatial complex that can be celebrated as one of the last and finest achievements of European Baroque.
