(2) Gonçal Peris [Gonzalo Pérez]

( fl c. 1404; d 1451). Son of (1) Antoni Peris. He was evidently trained by Pere Nicolau, and he was the chief representative of the so-called International Gothic in Valencia. He received many commissions, including some for the bishops of Barcelona and Valencia, and for the governor of Valencia. His talents as a painter and his refined palette of subtle tones are seen particularly in the Veronica of the Virgin (c. 1410; i.e. a painting of a linen cloth impressed with an image of the Virgin) and in the altarpiece of SS Martin, Ursula and Anthony Abbot (c. 1440–45) from the charterhouse of Portaceli (both Valencia, Mus. B.A.). The SS Clement and Martha in Valencia Cathedral from an altarpiece of 1412, Gonçal’s only authenticated work, combines strongly modelled faces with undulating Gothic draperies. By c. 1420, as in the St Barbara altarpiece from Puerto Mingalvo (Barcelona, Mus. A. Catalunya), this had given way to a more expressive style, particularly evident in the panel of the Crucifixion (Barcelona, Mus. A. Catalunya). In the altarpiece of SS Martin, Ursula and Anthony Abbot, the figures are realistically portrayed, deep in meditation, overcome with suffering or with faces radiant with gratitude.
