Peisser, Hans
(b Hassfurt am Main, 1500–05; d ?Prague, after 1571). German sculptor. He was a leading Nuremberg sculptor of the later Renaissance. He may have worked in Veit Stoss’s workshop before he acquired Nuremberg citizenship on 17 November 1526. Ludwig Neufahrer’s undated portrait medal of Peisser aged 31 (Dresden, Münzkab.) identifies Hassfurt as his native town. On 13 June 1553 he requested the Nuremberg council’s permission to live outside the city for a year, but otherwise resided there until he gave up his citizenship in 1559. Peisser seems to have briefly entered the service of Barnim IV, Duke of Pomerania, in Szczecin before moving to Prague, where he is documented in 1561 working for Archduke Ferdinand of Austria, Count of Tyrol (reg 1564–95). From 1562 until 1571, when he is last recorded, he served as Ferdinand’s court sculptor in Prague.
