(5) Willem (van) de Passe
(b Cologne, c. 1598; d London, before 14 Oct 1636). Engraver, son of (1) Crispijn de Passe (i). He left a much smaller oeuvre than his brothers Simon and Crispijn (ii). Willem initially worked on such series as Hortus floridus (1614), produced by his father and brothers. From 1621 he was in London, where he worked mainly as a portrait engraver. Some of the portraits were based on his own drawings, but in most cases he used designs by his father or other artists. Apart from royal portraits, he engraved book illustrations, title-pages, biblical scenes and series of the Senses. Willems style of engraving is not particularly strong; in its fineness, it resembles most closely that of his brother Crispijn (ii).
