Panderen, Egbert van
(b ?Haarlem, c. 1581; d ?Amsterdam, ?after 1628). Dutch engraver. In 1606 he was in Antwerp, where he joined the Guild of St Luke, and in 1609 and 1617 he is mentioned in Amsterdam. On 2 August 1617 he swore, in the presence of a notary, that he had engraved three copperplates for Louis Finson. Van Panderen may have stayed in Antwerp again later in his career. An engraving after Cornelis de Vos (after 1620; untraced), representing the Martyrdom of St Sebastian (Hollstein, no. 44), cannot have been made before 1620 at the earliest. Van Panderen made four engravings for Gérard Thibaults Académie de lespée (Leiden, 1628); these were based on designs by Michel Le Blon. Van Panderens name is associated primarily with reproductive prints, after the work of artists from Antwerp (Otto van Veen, David Teniers the elder, Pieter de Jode (i), Rubens and Tobias Verhaecht), the northern Netherlands (Petrus Feddes van Harlingen) and Italy (Antonio Tempesta). His style of engraving can easily be recognized by the use of hard lines with plenty of contrast.
