Onofri, Crescenzio

(b Rome, after 1632; d Florence, after 1712). Italian painter. He was a landscape painter and is thought to have been a pupil of Gaspard Dughet. His art followed the classical model of Dughet but remained less refined, his fresco decorations being characterized by rough brushwork and a bold overall effect. He was closest to Dughet in his Roman work, documented from 1671. In 1675 he was listed among the members of the Accademia di S Luca. He worked for about 20 years in Rome, taking part in the decoration of the residences of the Pamphili, Pallavicini, Rospigliosi and Colonna families. In the Palazzo Colonna he collaborated with Dughet on the frescoed decoration of the Sala del Trono. His frescoed decoration of four rooms in the Palazzo Theodoli in S Vito Romano, Rome, was particularly successful: Onofri also engraved this work (1696). In 1696 he moved to Florence, where he worked until his death for the court of the Grand Duke. In this period he collaborated with various artists who painted figures for his landscapes, among them Livio Mehus, with whom he worked on Dante and Virgil in Hell (Florence, Depositi Gal.) and a Landscape (Florence, Depositi Gal., on loan to Rome, Pal. Montecitorio) for the villa of Poggio a Caiano. Other artists involved in this project were Francesco Petrucci (1660–1719)—Landscape (London, N.G.)—and Alessandro Magnasco—four Landscapes with Figures (1700–11; Florence, Depositi Gal., on loan to Rome, Pal. Montecitorio and Pal. Madama).
