Ogiwara, Morie [Rokuzan]

(b Nagano Prefect., 1 Dec 1879; d Tokyo, 22 April 1910). Japanese sculptor. In 1899 he went to Tokyo to train as a painter. In 1901 he went to the USA. He studied at the Art Students League in New York, and in 1903 he went to France, studying at the Académie Julian, Paris. In 1904 he resolved to become a sculptor after being deeply impressed by Rodin’s Thinker. He returned to New York, meeting Kotaro Takamura there in 1906. In the same year he returned to France to study at the sculpture department of the Académie Julian. In 1907 he visited Rodin to receive instruction and also visited the British Museum in London, where he was impressed by the Egyptian sculptures.
