(b Ulm, bapt 18 Jan 1575; d Augsburg, 1632). German bronze-founder. He came of an old-established family of gun-founders. From 1596 to 1632 he was bronze-, gun- and bell-founder to the city of Augsburg, which in the years around 1600 was being splendidly decorated with monumental fountains and other urban ornaments in bronze. Most of these were executed while Neidhart was in charge of the foundry. Between 1597 and 1600 he cast the Hercules fountain and probably also the Mercury fountain by Adriaen de Vries. In 1603 the city commissioned from Hans Reichle a monumental group of the Archangel Michael Vanquishing Satan for the façade of the Zeughaus (in situ). Neidhart cast the main section in 1605/6 and the remaining figures between then and 1607. He undoubtedly also cast the figures for the rood altar attributed to Reichle in the church of SS Ulrich and Afra (erected 1605; in situ), while the eagle that Reichle sculpted for the Siegelhaus was cast in 1606. In 1620 Neidhart cast the city’s coat of arms by Christoph Murmann (c. 1564–1630) over the entrance to the new Rathaus of Augsburg. Between 1620 and 1626 he cast 13 busts of emperors (by unknown sculptors) for the Lower Hall of the building.
