Neeffs [Neefs], Jacob [Jacques]
(b Antwerp, 3 June 1610; d Antwerp, after 1660). Flemish etcher and engraver. He may have been apprenticed to Marinus Robyn van der Goes. In 16323 Neeffs became a master; in 1644 he took on Jacob van de Velde ( fl 163244) as a pupil and in 1660 Emmanuel van Winghen ( fl 167497). Neeffs was a follower of Rubens, one of the last to work under the master himself. He made an engraving (Hollstein, no. 20) after Rubenss Martyrdom of St Thomas (1637; Prague, N. Mus., Sternberk Pal.) and an etching (Hollstein, no. 29) after the Farm of Laken (c. 1618; London, Buckingham Pal., Royal Col.). Neeffs contributed to van Dycks Iconography (c. 163244); he etched the title-page, finished van Dycks Self-portrait (Hollstein, no. 76), added burin-work to the portrait of Frans Snyders (Hollstein, no. 91), whose face had been etched by van Dyck himself, and engraved the portrait of Antonius de Tassis. Neeffss oeuvre includes many reproductive prints after Gerard Seghers and Philip Fruytiers, as well as Annibale Carracci, Abraham van Diepenbeeck, van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens and Theodoor van Thulden.
