Merkelbach, Ben(jamin)

(b Amsterdam, 10 Oct 1901; d Amsterdam, 19 Oct 1961). Dutch architect. He trained at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Haarlem. In 1924–5 he worked in Belgium, and in 1927 he worked for nine months in the office of Mart Stam in Frankfurt am Main. Also in 1927, with five other former students of the school in Haarlem, he founded ARCHITECTENGROEP DE 8; Merkelbach helped draw up the manifesto and later became editor of the periodical De 8 en Opbouw (The 8 and construction).
