(1) Matthäus Merian (i)

(bapt Basle, 25 Sept 1593; d Bad Schwalbach, 19 June 1650). He was first trained as a glass-engraver in Basle, then learnt etching under Dietrich Meyer I (1572–1658) in Zurich in 1609–10. His earliest works are thus sketches for glass-engravings (1607; Basle, Kstmus. and Munich, Staatl. Graph. Samml.). Thirty-three early etchings from Zurich survive, mainly hunting and calendar pictures with definite topographical backgrounds. In 1611 Merian began to travel, first to Strasbourg—probably to work in Friedrich Brentel’s workshop—then to Nancy, where he contributed to the engravings of the Funeral of Charles III, Duke of Lorraine (Wüthrich 1966, i, nos 32–45), working under Claude de La Ruelle. In Paris (1612–4), working for Nicolas de Mathonière ( fl 1st quarter of 17th century) among others, he engraved scenes from the court life of Maria de’ Medici and Louis XIII, emblems and a plan of the city (W 1966, 46–79; 244–6). In 1615 he returned to Basle, where he drew a major plan of the city (London, BM and Basle, Hist. Mus.) and copied engravings by Jacques Bellange (W 1966, 85–95) and hunting scenes by Antonio Tempesta (W 1966, 478–94). In Stuttgart in 1616 he illustrated a royal baptism of the house of Württemberg (Repraesentativ der Fürstlichen Aufzug und Ritterspil...bey Ihr Fl. G. Neügebornen Sohn, Fridrich Hertzog zu Württemberg etc. Fürstlicher Kindtauffen (10–17 März, 1616)) for E. van Hulsen. He then travelled via Augsburg to Oppenheim.
