Mebes, Paul

(b Magdeburg, 1872; d Berlin, 1938). German architect. He studied at the Technische Hochschule in Magdeburg before setting up practice in Berlin. Among his early works were the Oberrealschule (1909–10), Beuckestrasse 27, Zehlendorf, and offices for the Nordstern insurance company (1913–15), Badensche Strasse/Meraner Strasse, Schöneberg, Berlin. In 1907 he was appointed director of the Beamten-Wohnungs-Verein zu Berlin, a large housing cooperative. Among his early works for this client were housing blocks at Fritschweg/Rückertstrasse/Grillparzerstrasse, Steglitz; at Grabbeallee/Paul-Franke-Strasse, Niederschönhausen; and at Horstweg/Knobelsdorffstrasse, Charlottenburg (all 1908). After 1911 Mebes worked with his brother-in-law, the architect Paul Emmerich (1876–1958), and the two were responsible in the 1920s and early 1930s for a large number of housing estates in Berlin, notable for their rational planning, undemonstrative elevations and generous provision of windows. Among the best-known schemes were the Heidehof (1923–4), Niklasstrasse, Zehlendorf, and blocks at Bergstrasse (1927–31), Steglitz; in the Friedrich-Ebert-Siedlung (1929–31) at Müllerstrasse and Afrikanische Strasse, Wedding; in the Forschungssiedlung Spandau-Haselhorst (1930–32), Gartenfelder Strasse; and the Spreesiedlung (1932) at Hainstrasse, Niederschöneweide.
