Matcham, Frank [Francis]

(b Newton Abbot, Devon, 22 Nov 1854; d Southend, Essex, 17 May 1920). English architect. He first trained in the office of George S. Bridgeman (1839–c. 1900) at Paignton, Devon. Later Matcham moved to London and joined the practice of Jethro T. Robinson, architect to Hengler’s Circus and Theatre Consultant to the Lord Chamberlain. From the latter connection Matcham derived a thorough grounding in theatre building regulations. He was always to be concerned for safety, ventilation and sight-lines, and his eventually large practice was to employ engineering staff.
