Master S

( fl c. 1520). South Netherlandish engraver. So-called because he usually signed his engravings with the monogram S, the Master was the author of an extensive group of prints representing mainly religious themes. Stylistically his work is closely linked to ANTWERP MANNERISM. Some of his prints were inspired by the engravings of Albrecht Dürer, Lucas van Leyden, Dirk Vellert and others. The compositions are often rather stiff, and in general the work appears archaic. Master S was certainly not a first-class engraver; his historical significance lies in the fact that he headed an active workshop in which prints were mass-produced for the first time in the southern Netherlands. The small engravings were sometimes glued into manuscripts and served as cheap ‘ersatz’ miniatures. Over 450 prints have been attributed to him, but many are the work of collaborators or pupils.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
