Master of the Triumph of Death
( fl first half of the 14th century). Italian painter. He was named by Thode after the Triumph of Death, part of the largest cycle of 14th-century frescoes in the Camposanto of Pisa. Other frescoes in the cycle attributable to him are the Last Judgement, Hell, the Thebaid, the Resurrection, Christ Appearing to the Apostles and the Ascension. They were severely damaged during World War II. The cycle is distinctive for its large scale, unique iconography and imaginative interpretation. The frescoes are executed in a violent and highly animated style, showing an inclination to irony and a use of the grotesque, distant both from the equilibrium and control of the figural language of Giotto and from the refinement of Sienese painting.
Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
