Master of St Veronica

( fl c. 1395–?after 1425). German painter. He is named from the panel depicting St Veronica with the Sudarium (c. 1415; Munich, Alte Pin.; see fig.). The most influential painter in Cologne in the early 15th century, he appears to have been an immigrant who introduced the International Court style and thus initiated the ‘school of Cologne’. On stylistic grounds it is generally assumed that he settled in Cologne c. 1400. The quality of his work has been acclaimed by such perceptive authors as Goethe, Dehio and Stange.

Part of the Masters, anonymous, and monogrammists family
